Why Supplement Awareness is Important
Most people treat supplements like snacks — pick what they like, swallow, and hope for magic.
But supplements are active substances. They affect biochemistry, hormones, nerves, digestion, sleep, and even the liver/kidneys.
Ayurveda’s view:
  • Supplements = “Aushadhi” (medicine)
  • They should be used when necessary, with a clear diagnosis, in the right form, at the right time, and with the right digestion (agni).
  • If your digestion is weak, supplements will not absorb, they will build toxins (ama), and they may create new symptoms.

Understanding Magnesium — the perfect example

Magnesium has many forms, and each form works differently.
Most people buy whatever they see on the shelf — which is dangerous because the wrong form = zero improvement + possible side effects.

Common Magnesium Forms & What They Actually Do

| Magnesium Type | Best For | Notes |
Magnesium Oxide | Constipation, digestion | Poorly absorbed. NOT helpful for sleep, stress, twitching, etc. Often misused.
Magnesium Glycinate | Sleep, relaxation, anxiety, muscle twitching | Very gentle, well absorbed. The best for nervous system support.
Magnesium Citrate | Constipation + mild deficiency | Slight laxative effect.
Magnesium Malate | Energy, fatigue, muscle pain | Good for people with low energy.
Magnesium Threonate | Brain function, memory, cognitive support | Crosses blood–brain barrier.
Magnesium Chloride | Absorption + topical use | Often used in oils and baths.

If someone takes the wrong form — their symptoms will NOT improve.
Example:
Your friend had eye twitching (deficiency → nerve excitability).
They used magnesium oxide (for constipation).
Result: no improvement.
Because the correct form was glycinate or threonate.

AYURVEDA’S PERSPECTIVE

Ayurveda does not recommend blind supplementation.

Before taking any supplement, Ayurveda checks:

Agni (digestion) – Can you absorb it?
If not, it becomes ama (toxins).

State of Doshas – Vata, Pitta, Kapha
Each dosha needs different forms and different dosages.

Root cause – Is the deficiency from diet? Stress? Poor absorption? Tissue weakness?

Ayurvedic protocol for supplements:
  1. Diagnose deficiency
  2. Strengthen digestion
  3. Choose the correct form for the body type
  4. Monitor symptoms early
  5. Use it short-term only
  6. Correct diet + lifestyle long-term
Supplements are tools — not a lifestyle.
